Six Flags America LGBTQ Pride Splash and Ride event happens 7/18
We live within driving distance of two awesome theme parks, but lets face it, as Richmonders these rides can get a bit repetitive.
Little do some of us know Six Flags America is but a hundred-or-so miles away and they’ve got a special LGBTQ Pride event happening this month making it the perfect time to visit.
Six Flags America has tons of coaters and thrill rides, including an entire DC Comics themed section including the Jokers Jinx, Superman:The Ride of Steel, and the Batwing.
Their water park, Hurricane Harbor, is sure to keep you cool this summer as well.
Organized by NOVA Pride and the Capital Pride Alliance (some of the folks behind DC Pride), Six Flags Pride Splash and Ride is a day-long event including full park access and special Pride Party exclusive to ticket holders after 8 PM.
When Six Flags America was first approached three years ago by the two LGBTQ groups,
President and Executive Director of NOVA Pride (happening Oct. 3rd!) Brian Reach said the park was enthusiastic about the idea.
“They had a lot of change in that area, in Prince Georges County where the park is located, and they were trying to find new markets and new people to bring on board with events, so they were totally gung-ho about our event,” said Reach.
NOVA Pride nets a few thousand dollars for their participation in the event every year, money greatly needed according to Reach.
A resident of Fairfax County, Reach said he grew up near the park but always thought it was so much further away.
“We always went to Kings Dominion, but after we went to the first Splash and Ride three years ago, I realized how great this park was, and how close it was too.” he said.
A fan of coasters as well as helping support his organization, Reach said there’s lot to love about Splash and Ride.
“It’s a combination of being excited about a fundraiser, and also throwing an event that helps bring in lots of people from the community to something,” he said. “It’s also about reaching out and getting more exposure for the LGBTQ community through good times.”
The after-8 ticket holder-exclusive party is Reach’s favorite part though. He said DJ’s, drag shows, and dancing fill the water park until midnight that night. “It’s so much fun!”
A VIP section is also available with Cabana space, free non-alcoholic beverages, and lounge chairs all day. VIP upgrades are $30, and cabanas are on sale for $200.
