Shangela Talks VA Pride – Halleloo RVA!
Halleloo Richmond, Shangela, the breakout star of Ru Paul’s Drag Race season 3 and world-famous drag entertainer, is making her way to our little River city this weekend to help take part in Virginia Pride. She’ll be touring the parties – Including our Magazine Release Party at Barcode! - this evening, taking photos and chatting with fans, as well as performing during the day-of festivities.
Be sure to give the girl a shout when you see her – she’s as sweet as pie for sure – and get to know a little more about her via the interview she gave GayRVA below:
What makes a successful drag queen?
If you ask Ru Paul, she says charisma, uniqueness, nerve and talent. And I agree with all of that, but I think the most important things are also creativity, determination, and biggest of all is belief in yourself. If you don’t believe in who you are, there’s no way you can’t show that on stage, and no way you can go to the next level.
Do you have a favorite project since your Drag Race win?
There’s been so many, and they’ve all been so different. But I’ve been able to travel around the world – Paris, Amsterdam, London, next week I’ll be in Cape Town south Africa. I think one of the best things, besides being able to work on TV and all that, has been to be able to connect with fans around the world and to have a great time with people. It’s been amazing.
But of course, doing the “Lets Have a Kiki” dance next to Sarah Jessica Parker on the television show GLEE! is also way up there (laughs)
You were involved in a promo video for a new Cher album, how did that happen?
Oh my gosh, I was so excited. Cher partnered with Logo to release a promo video for her song Women’s World. They picked four of us as entertainers to be part of the project. And, in addition, I had just performed for Cher at a show in west Hollywood, and I met her there. And When i met her she said “Oh my God, you’re so tiny!” and I said “Oh My God You’re CHER!” (laughs)
From doing so many great events, and Absolut doing so many great events, its been a great chance to meet a lot of really amazing people!
How did the production of the Halleloosin’ It! DVD go?
This has been one of my biggest highlights of the year – Just in my own personal career. I’m a comedian, I worked as a stand up comedian before I did drag. I was able to do my stand up performance on my appearance as Drag Race as Laquifa. And now I’ve written a one-man-dressed-as-one-ho show. And it did really well and we were touring so much so we thought, lets put it on DVD so people can enjoy it anywhere.
Absolut was a sponsor, and it was great to work with them – they’re a creative brand, and I’m a creative Ho, so halleloo, we do it well together!
Have you been to Richmond before?
This is gonna be my first time being part of VA Pride, I came to Richmond some time ago and performed at Nu just after I released my song “WORQIN’ GIRL” and I’m so excited to be coming to Richmond to turn the place up! I’ve been getting tweets and Instagrams and I’m just so excited Absolut sponsored the event cause you know no-one turns out the party like Absolut!
I’ve been so grateful to do the work i’ve done. I’ve guest starred on every major network – ABC, NBC, CBS and Fox. And there’s more to come! There’s always more to come. And I’m so thankful to be able to follow my dream as an actor. There’s so many queens out there, and I want them to know you don’t have to just be on stage at a club. There are so many super talented drag professionals out there and I want them to know go for every dream they have, honey, every dream!
Is a club show different from a Pride show?
You know, the dynamic can be a little different. It’s the same energy – everyone’s there to have a good time and have a drink. But at Pride, there is a strong sense of celebration. Everyone comes out, there’s a lot of love. So I’m excited to be there, and I’ve been working Prides for the last 2 years and I love it!
Advice to have a good time at Pride?
Have a cocktail! Yea!! (laughs) It’s to remember the spirit of the day. To love yourself, to love others, and have a good time – however you experience it. If it’s having a drink, or just dancing to the music, or experiencing Shangela – make sure you love it!
