Remember the firestorm this show caused last year on William & Mary’s Campus? The controversy surrounding the use of student activity fees being used towards the provocative performance even had VCU pull the show from their schedule. The Gay Community Center was able to accommodate a last minute move. A year later, things have simmered down a bit. W&M is hosting again, but in Richmond, the tour will be stopping by the Firehouse Theater on March 25. It’s being touted as “possibly the final tour.” Details below:
The Sex Workers Art Show Returns to Richmond!!
Wednesday, March 25th at
The Firehouse Theater
TWO SHOWS: 6:30PM and 9PM
This year’s incredible lineup of performers includes stripper-activist and headmistress of the New York Academy of Burlesque JO BOOBS; infamous feminist author of I Love Dick CHRIS KRAUS; award-winning porn star and writer LORELEI LEE; performance artist and comic queen of cleavage The World Famous *BOB*; founder and director of the nation’s first all-black burlesque troupe, SIMONE DE LA GHETTO; performer and musical theatre mutineer ERIN MARKEY; operatic singer and performer of queer black masculinity REGINALD LAMAR; and tour founder, director and author of Working Sex, ANNIE OAKLEY.
The show includes people from all areas of the sex industry: strippers, prostitutes, dommes, film stars, phone sex operators, internet models, etc. It smashes traditional stereotypes and moves beyond “positive” and “negative” into a fuller articulation of the complicated ways sex workers experience their jobs and their lives. The Sex Workers’ Art Show entertains, arouses, and amazes while simultaneously offering scathing and insightful commentary on notions of class, race, gender, labor and sexuality!
