Richmond Celebrates Harvey Milk With Festival
For the first time on Saturday, California honors Harvey Milk with a day in his honor.
Metropolitan Community Church and the Gay Community Center of Richmond bring Harvey Milk Day to Richmond with this weekend’s Equality For All Festival.
“We wanted to get out into the community and we couldn’t think of a better message than equality,” Stephanie Smith says.
Smith sits on MCC’s Board of Directors and is one of the event’s organizers.
“Being that it’s Harvey Milk day, it seemed like a great opportunity to put the two together.”
The event is a fundraiser for both MCC and the GCCR. Expect live performances from Narrissa Bond, Rodney Barnes and others. Spiritual Art workshops including painting and meditation will be available for a nominal fee.
Artisans, kids activities, and a bake sale and raffles benefitting MCC will be happening throughout the day.
In celebration of Milk, a film screening caps off the festival at 5 p.m.
“He spoke of the importance of people coming out in their occupations and how that promotes so much awareness in the greater community,” Smith says of Milk.
In line with the festival’s theme, Milk championed for equality for all people regardless of race, sexual orientation, gender or handicap.
In February, MCC and the GCCR held Love Equality Style, a series of events during Valentine’s Day weekend.
“This is about bringing people together and showing true friendship and respect for one another.”
Smith says she hopes for an annual event and that there was a need to do something for the community to bring people together.
“This event is about all sorts of people from different walks of life being open with one another,” she says. “My hope for Saturday is that people can share in the overall theme of what we’re trying to accomplish.”
