Kicking off the start of its season their 2014 Saturday, the Virginia Opera will be hosting its second annual “Opera in the Park” at Dogwood Dell Amphitheater.
The event, which is free and open to the public, features a variety of opera and musical pieces ranging from the classic “La Dona e Mobile” from Rigoletto to “Tonight Quintet” from West Side Story. The Richmond Symphony Orchestra will be providing the music for the evening, conducted by Adam Turner, who is Principal Conductor and Artistic Director for Virginia Opera.
By way of their Emerging Artists program, the Opera will also be showcasing performers from around the state who are building a talented repertoire within the world of opera. The event will be hosted by Dr. Glenn Waters.
While Opera in the Park may be in its infancy, the Virginia Opera itself goes back forty years, as this year marks their 40th anniversary. According to the company’s website, the Opera was established in 1974, making its debut at the Norfolk Center Theater. In 1977 they made the trek into Richmond, and by 1983 an office was opened in the area. In 1994, the company was recognized by the Virginia General Assembly as the Official Opera Company of the Commonwealth.
In addition to the free music and entertainment, there will be several prizes given away during the event; prizes range from a $65 gift certificate from to Massage on the Move to 2 free tickets to opening night of Sweeney Todd at The Carpenter Theater.
Opera in the Park is this Saturday, August 30. Doors open at 6 and the action starts at 7:30. For those who cannot make the performance, another one will be held Saturday, September 6 in Norfolk at Town Point Park. Opening and start times are the same for both events.
