Provocative drag meets noisy punk for the holiday edition of this all-LGBTQ celebration.

The freaky and fantastic Queer Bait Ball is coming back to Strange Matter this Friday with Queer Bait Ball Vol. 2: Holiday Bangover.
Mastermind of the Queer Bait Ball Johny Khaili is once again bringing the LGBTQ community together for a celebration of self expression that will surely be a night to remember. The previous event was so well-received that Khalili decided to bring it back after only a few months, rather than wait a full year.
“So many LGBTQ people who weren’t necessarily familiar with or part of the noise/punk scene came out to celebrate the weirdness, and expressed appreciation for our all-queer underground show. It inspired us to keep the ball rolling,” Khaili said.
While the first event focused on harsh noise, electronic, and hip hop music, the “Holiday Bangover” will be a showcase of punk rock and drag. The event will be hosted by Ellen Degenerate of Baltimore, who City Paper readers voted Baltimore’s best drag queen in 2015. She will be bringing to the stage Queens that have traveled from all over the east coast, as well as local and regional punk rock performers.
“This time, we’ve got some incredible queens from Philly, Pittsburgh and Baltimore, all serving different, unique styles, from confrontational punk to gender-bending pop,” Khaili said.
Pittsburgh Queen Moon Baby will be visiting Richmond for the first time at this event, and is excited to bring their bedroom pop to Strange Matter. “I think all of the people in the showcase make work that’s not just pop music about being drag queens or being queer; it’s important,” Moon Baby said. “I always try to convey some message about how we feel about who we are, and the perception that we fight against.”
Ann Artist is traveling from Philadelphia to add their fearless fashion and impressive six pack to the Queer Bait Ball; and Richmond favorite Rexxx is bringing her high energy genderfuck glam to an evening of celebration.
The Holiday Bangover won’t just feature drag queens, though. The Strange Matter stage will also be taken over by three punk/ grunge bands as part of the event. The Baltimore hardcore/punk band Syringe will be there, along with local grunge band Carry Fisher and new Richmond punk band BUTT.
Speciality cocktails as unique as the guests and performers will also be available to bring out the ho-ho-holiday cheer in everyone. Which is important, since the holiday season isn’t always the most wonderful time of the year for the LGBTQ community.
“The holiday season can be a very hard time for LGBTQ people,” Khaili said. “Pretty much our goal is to throw the weirdest, queerest holiday party ever for people to get wild and have fun with their chosen family.”
Doors to the Holiday Bangover open at 7 p.m. on Friday, December 15 at Strange Matter. Tickets are $8 in advance and $10 at the door.
