David Johnson hopes to bring something different to Richmond's nightlife with New York Deli's Poplab.
First Friday, Fourth Friday, Third Thursdays, and then First Tuesdays dinner at a friend’s. Or wait, is that on First Wednesday? David Johnson, front of house manager at New York Deli in Carytown, wants you to pencil in Poplab on Second Thursdays.
Tomorrow night, Johnson promises Poplab will bring a new sound to Carytown called Hiptronica. It’s his response to Fourth Friday – which the restaurant hosted back in January to a packed house that had everybody elbow-to-elbow.
“It’s just a way to break up the month” Johnson said. “What do people do until Fourth Friday? This is a temporary fix with a different kind of music.”
Standing behind the bar at the Deli, the New York native and Richmonder of three years, said the biggest complaint he hears is that there’s nothing to do in the city.
Johnson said that Poplab isn’t necessarily a gay night, but rather an alternative to the nightlife experience in Richmond. His bar’s always been gay-friendly.
“We’ve hosted two gay happy hours and one year we did a party after Pride,” he said.
Drink specials start at 8 p.m. and music from DJ David X will be booming from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m.
“We’re trying to make Richmond a little more New York,” Johnson said.
