The infamous fashion and style icon Coco Chanel has been quoted “A girl should be two things: classy and fabulous.”
Shannel from the first season of RuPaul’s Drag Race is indeed fabulous and I had an opportunity to interview this diva before her upcoming performance at Nations tomorrow.
Shannel has spent the last 15 years as a makeup artist and female impersonator. The drag name of Shannel was inspired by years of working as a makeup artist with Chanel cosmetics. Below are some excerpts from our interview:
GayRVA: What convinced you to try out for RuPaul’s Drag Race?
Shannel: “A friend told me about the race and my mother actually convinced me to do it. I sent the info to the show and they received it the next day at 10:30am. I received a call at 11 am offering me to be on the show. I was the first person they picked for RuPaul’s Drag Race.”
How can you sum up your experience on RuPaul’s Drag Race?
Interesting experience but very stressful since we were working 12-14 hour days. It was a good first season overall.
What convinced you to start performing as an female impersonator on a regular basis instead of doing just makeup?
I felt I could make more of a mark performing than doing makeup artistry.
Makeup will always be a part of Shannel’s life and a makeup DVD filled with tips and tricks is coming out in June 2010. You can visit http://FaceTheIllusion.com for more info. Shannel has lots of projects in the works for the next year and you can check her out on RuPaul’s “Drag U” which airs on LogoTV this summer.
Shannel performs tomorrow, Thursday, May 27, 8 p.m. at Nations, 2729 W. Broad St. A pre-show begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 at the door.
