Wear silver and shine at Mars Bar this Thursday, July 28.
Always inclusive and welcoming to Richmond’s gay and lesbian community, this is the first time the Shockoe Bottom nightspot is hosting a special night it is coining as an LGBTQ & Friends Bash. According to business manager Jackie Bishop, it’s the club’s way of giving back.
“We’ve always considered ourself an ‘everyone bar’ …the gay community has found this to be a great place to come, have a good time, and never have a problem,” Bishop said. ”When we started to plan events this year, we thought it would be great to reach out to a community that has been so good to us.”
Bishop got with some of the club’s regulars and started planning the night that will include an benefit raffle for Fan Free Clinic.
Heaven-Leigh Kennedy will be hosting the evening that includes drag hotspots in the crowd courtesy of Michelle Livigne and Lady Channel.
As for the retro 80s music you remember on Thursday nights? It’s a new day.
“We’ve realized it was in our best interest to reach out and mix in more modern music,” Bishop said. ”Some of the people coming out now weren’t alive in the 80s…the Pac-Man machine is still here.”
In addition to Mars Bars’ resident DJ spinning, the club is giving swag bags to the first fifty people in the door. If you didn’t sport your metallics, no worries – glitter makeup artists will help you shine for a special photo booth-style picture.
“We’ve never done this at Mars Bar so we hope everyone sees we appreciate them and comes out to have a good time,” she said.
