Director: Harald Zwart
Writers: Jessica Postigo (screenplay), Cassandra Clare (based on the novel by)
Stars: Lily Collins, Jamie Campbell Bower, Robert Sheehan
The writer of this series of novels (and this subsequent movie) is cashing in on all the fantasy tropes: demons, witches, vampires, werewolves. A young woman (Lily Collins) becomes intertwined with Shadowhunters, who are out to save the world…but wait, she’s also torn between two handsome men…starting to sound familiar? The maze of characters just gets ridiculous. There are some cool fantasy concepts and special efx, but the plot is cluttered and the action is unfocused. There must be an audience with the book fans, but for everyone else, it’s just a flashy mess crammed with complications.
GAY ANGLE: Three handsome young protagonists and two gay attractions.
In A World
Director: Lake Bell
Writer: Lake Bell
Stars: Lake Bell, Jeff Garlin, Fred Melamed
The voiceover business is largely a man’s world, esp. for movie trailers. Lake Bell wrote/directed/stars as a woman who’s trying to break in. It doesn’t help that her father (Fred Melamed) is one of the leaders in the biz and unsupportive of her efforts. Although the overall mood is upbeat, there aren’t a lot of outright laffs. The cast in enjoyable and the energy never wanes. This inside look at show biz with a healthy dose of relationship challenges could almost be a Woody Allen satire. Not especially memorable, but fun.
GAY ANGLE: Bear alert (if your into that): Melamed spends lots of time with his shirt off and he’s covered in thick gray hair.
Jerry Williams reviewed movies for WTVR-TV for 14 years and for Style Weekly for 10 years. When he launched his own website in 1998 at TVJerry.com, he took his reviews to the Internet. Through those hundreds of reviews, Jerry kept his sexual orientation muted. So, he's excited to be adding "gay angles" to his postings for GayRVA.com.
