Stars: Robert Redford, Nick Nolte, Stanley Tucci
After 30 years of respectable living, a member of the Weather Underground (Susan Sarandon) is arrested. This sends another fugitive (Robert Redford) on the run, while a plucky journalist (Shai LaBeouf) tracks the case. This is not a taught chase, but a thoughtful pursuit. It’s interesting to watch the solution comes together, but could have been a tighter. The cast is full of accomplished actors (Julie Chistie, Nick Nolte,) who all do a good job. While political messages creep in too often, the pursuit of the man and the truth makes for an absorbing journey.
GAY ANGLE: LaBeouf is sporting curly locks and a scruff that makes him surprisingly sexy.
Pain & Gain
Director: Michael Bay
Writers: Christopher Markus (screenplay), Stephen McFeely (screenplay)
Stars: Mark Wahlberg, Dwayne Johnson, Anthony Mackie
Good thing this movie is based on a true story: There are so many stupid decisions and preposterous plot turns, nobody could write it. Three bodybuilders (Dwayne Johnson, Mark Wahlberg, Anthony Mackie) decide to kidnap a man and claim his valuables. But these guys are fueled by testosterone, not brains and it’s a disaster from the beginning. As for the film, it’s a frantic, loud, jumbled mess…over the top and not in a good way. More humor would have helped (thanks to Johnson for the bit there is). There’s no denying that director Michael Bay knows how to make movies, but he’s trying too hard and it fails more than it succeeds. BTW, it’s not cool to be homophobic anymore.
GAY ANGLE: If you like pumped, there’s lots on display, but frankly, Ed Harris is sexier.
Jerry Williams reviewed movies for WTVR-TV for 14 years and for Style Weekly for 10 years. When he launched his own website in 1998 at TVJerry.com, he took his reviews to the Internet. Through those hundreds of reviews, Jerry kept his sexual orientation muted. So, he's excited to be adding "gay angles" to his postings for GayRVA.com.
