After a short setup sketch and a montage of his sold out tour in Canada and Europe, comic Kevin Hart mounts the stage at Madison Square Garden to do his stand up. In his manic, high-energy style he covers personal relationships with lots of profanity. I’ve enjoyed his performances in movies and found him entertaining, but the audience around me laffed a lot more than I did. If you like Hart’s material, you won’t be let down.
GAY ANGLE: Although he’s not specifically homophobic, he does joke about prison rape and accidentally bumping a man’s dick.
Despicable Me 2
Directors: Pierre Coffin, Chris Renaud
Writers: Ken Daurio (screenplay), Cinco Paul (screenplay)
Stars: Steve Carell, Kristen Wiig, Benjamin Bratt
Like so many sequels, this one lacks the inventiveness of the original. Gru, the villain, is now a good guy and he’s recruited to help stop an old evil rival. Of course, the popularity of the minions assured that they’re even more prevalent. They’re still cute, but the off-kilter gags are less off. The visual style is still quirky, but the humor is more mainstream and less funny. While it’s certainly energetic and the soundtrack is slamming, it’s simply not as much fun this time around. NOTE: Just like the last one, the best 3D is during the credits.
Jerry Williams reviewed movies for WTVR-TV for 14 years and for Style Weekly for 10 years. When he launched his own website in 1998 at TVJerry.com, he took his reviews to the Internet. Through those hundreds of reviews, Jerry kept his sexual orientation muted. So, he's excited to be adding "gay angles" to his postings for GayRVA.com.
