From the previews this looks like the nail-biting experience of a plane crash. That’s pretty true…for the first 15 minutes. After that, we watch the pilot (Denzel Washington) get drunk and drunker, while living in ever-more belligerent denial. If this is sounding like a movie about alcoholism, bingo! What starts as a compelling story turns into a grueling character study and deteriorates into a painfully-long descent into misery. Washington does a good job with an unlikable charater, but the writing is lackluster (with the exception of comic relief John Goodman), the pacing drags and the overall message is simply too much of a message.
