The Basement Comedy Show with Mary Jane French has been going on since October, and each month since has been bringing Richmond a showcase of local comics performing their best 15 Minutes.
French, a local transgender comic, partnered up with TheatreLAB last year as an official company artist in a program that allows local talent to organize events in the theater’s Basement space at 300 East Broad street. French’s primary focus with her comedic contributions has been organizing this show as a means of growing the Richmond comedy scene with alternatives to “corporate chain comedy clubs.”
While there are plenty of open mic’s in town for comics try out new jokes and hone their material, The Basement Comedy show is one of few independent comedy shows where local comics can showcase their acts rather than getting booked to open for a touring comic.
The show’s fourth installment will be this upcoming Sunday on January 24th, and feature sets from: Benjamin J. Braman, Rachel Murphy, Clay Shoaf, and John Thomas. The doors open at 7:30 while the show starts at 8pm and tickets are $7 at the door. Payment is accepted through cash or card.
Starting in February the Basement Comedy Show will be consistently on the last Sunday of the month! Come out and support live, local comedy! Our city has so much talent you can watch grow and develop; you just have to come see it!
As for videos of performers coming up, there are not many videos online of richmond comics so I don’t have video of the upcoming performers but I make highlights videos of each show, so here are links to the highlights videos of each show so far as well as some specific bits from past shows.
