Tonight, Monday, July 28th at 7:30 PM, The 9:55 Comedy Club Presents Laughing Gay-ly. This is the 5th annual all LGBT stand-up showcase that they have done, and is the only one going on in Richmond right now.
It’s also one of the only all LGBT shows across the state.
Admission is free, but there will be a donation box and all of the proceeds will go to Richmond House, Fan Free Clinic, and the Gay Community Center of Richmond. There will also be a raffle supported by the Richmond burlesque scene, The Funny Bone Comedy Club, and restaurants like Watt 25 and Fall Out.
The show is hosted by Sarah Wilson and the performers are Brittany St. Jordan, Lily O’Connor, Jennifer Lemons, Trish Blaine, Buster Schoen, and headlined by Bounce Adams.
The facilitator of the event, Ray Bullock, says that “People need to realize that laughter is universal. All people do it. All men, all women it doesn’t matter if that woman loves a woman or if that man loves a man, we all laugh. I do these shows (all LGBT, all women) in hopes that someday we won’t have to. One day those labels won’t matter.”
The comedians also agree, that they’re just here to make people laugh. “It’s important to let the world know that even though certain groups may see our ways of life as an affront to their beliefs we really don’t give a fuck,” says Brittany St. Jordan. “We are here to enjoy life while showcasing our pride of being anything but straight.”
Just like any other comedian St. Jordan is excited for the opportunity to perform for a show like this. Besides open mic’s this is her first booked gig and she can’t wait for tonight. “It’s a really nice way to break out of the circle of local comedy folks who have heard my jokes over and over again and finally get to do my thing in front of an audience,” St. Jordan says.
The 9:55 is the longest standing comedy venue in Richmond and is located at Bottoms Up Pizza at 1700 Dock Street. For more information visit the facebook event.
