It’s been a few weeks, so I think we can talk about Star Wars and not worry about spoilers. Either way, if you haven’t seen it yet, go out and do so ASAP.
Moving on, the internet has done some research and many are starting to think a secondary character played by the incredible Oscar Issac might be Star Wars first gay character.
The evidence is a bit thin, but still fun to play with – mainly the interaction his Issac’s character, Po Dameron, has with Finn (played by John Boyega) toward the end of the movie.
As Finn returns to the surviving rebel fleet he sees Dameron on the landing pad and the two have a brief exchange featuring a prominent… lip bite:
In the same scene, Finn tries to give his coat back to Dameron only to have the pilot say “It looks better on you” with a nice full-body scan.
Issac has since gone on the Ellen show and in so many words, hinted a “subtle” onscreen romance between himself and another character.
“”I think it’s a very subtle romance that’s happening,” he told Ellen. “You know, you have to look very closely. You have to watch it a few times to see the hints. But there was. At least I was playing romance.”
Take a look at the video below, Issac’s line happens towards the end:
LGBT+ representation in “Star Wars” would be a huge victory for the continued fight for freedom and acceptance that still faces so many people. LGBT+ teens still have a much higher rate of suicide and depression. A gay character in the biggest franchise in the universe, one linked to so many childhoods and formative to what kids think of as right and wrong, wouldn’t quite be the same as blowing up a Death Star, but it would be close.
A gay Poe Dameron could save lives in this galaxy.
“Star Wars” has always supposedly been about the fight for freedom. Here’s hoping the Resistance’s best pilot will make that fight real, and bring even more representation to a galaxy far far away.
Are we reaching? Or is this interracial, intergalactic romance an actual possibility?
