I often find myself at bars or venues or metal shows defending Carly Rae Jepsen’s 2015 album E*mo*tion to total strangers. Most remember her for the 2012 mega hit “Call Me Maybe,” but few even know the former-Canadian Idol star released an album last year, one that topped some of the hippest “best of 2015″ lists.
Why? Cause it’s sugary sweet pop magic from cover to cover. When you make as much money off a single you’ve got room to work on future projects. Sure enough Jepsen took her “Call Me” money and traveled the world recording tracks at studios around the world and working with producers we’ve never heard of.
The final product is intensely positive, well produced and incredibly good.
Well now, one year after the release of Emotion, Jepsen has dropped a b-sides collection of songs left on the cutting room floor and the good news is they all seem to be as upbeat and incredible as the original release.
The album channeled powerful 80′s pop and ballads to create a unique soundtrack in an age where pop music is often layered with sexual innuendo. While Britney can demand you call her whatever you want, Jepsen just wants to hang out, pre-game some at your Fan apartment and then hit up Babe’s till last call.
Check out one of the leaked tracks below:
“Emotion Side B almost never was,” said Jepsen in a statement to fans. “Well technically all the songs existed I just didn’t think to share them until we toured. But meeting many of you face to face, getting to share in one of the most joyful touring experiences of my life, all I wanted was to give back more of the feelings you all gave to me.”
I got the chance to see Jepsen in concert at The Norva a few months back and it was one of the best shows I’ve seen. Sure, the audience was pretty small and it was all 14-year-old girls and 25+year-old gay guys, but she featured a full live band playing each part (even the saxophone!) It was truly amazing.
You can listen to the entire new album on places like Apple Music, so get on it and dust off them roller skates!
