As the day patrons leave, the park will fill up with an estimated 2,500 gays and lesbians. With the close proximity to Richmond and Fredericksburg, the event draws a crowd from across Virginia and D.C.
The event is hosted as a benefit for Brother Help Thyself, a charity that provides funding to other LGBT and AIDS/HIV service agencies.
“It’s an evening when the gay, lesbian, transgender, queer, etc. community can celebrate and party without giving an iota of thought to what others might think,” former Gay Night chair Pete Delate says.
Delate says the event was originally a daytime event shared with the public, but evolved into the current afterhours affair with LGBTs and friends. He says children are welcome to accompany their parents or guardians, but with the end time set for 1 a.m., it could be a late night.
Rides will stay open from 8 p.m. – 11 p.m. with a dance party on International Street following until 1 a.m. Delate says that liquor and other spirits will be available. ”Where else can you dance under the stars and the light from the Eiffel Tower?” he says.
DJ Steve Henderson provides the soundtrack for the evening. Henderson has played Chicago, New York City, and Washington, D.C.
