It can be hard to meet women in Richmond, let alone women of a certain maturity. While other members of the Richmond LGBT community might enjoy loud bars or a cell phone app that allows for a quick meet up, GALS Richmond hopes the art gallery space at the Gay Community Center of Richmond will make for a classy lesbian soiree.
“We’re trying to start something, something brand new. And we think it will fulfill a need in the community that has not been fulfilled in the past,” said GALS in a press release. The group expressed their disinterest in the bar-scene, and how not all women want to meet in a club. “Women have had a hard time finding each other. Usually they go to bars which are geared toward younger people.”
GALS hopes to highlight elements of the current lesbian singles scene that appeal to the more mature female crowd. The event boasts a cocktail piano player, the creative atmosphere of an art space, and the safety of the GCCR.
While the event is still in its infancy, GALS hopes to become a quarterly occurrence, with the goal of not only meeting and interacting with other lesbians who appreciate a more intimate setting, but also turning the event into a kind of fund-raiser for the GCCR.
GALS expects women from around the central VA area, from Charlottesville to Williamsburg, to come out for the event. Be sure to check it out if you’re tired of the bar scene, and are looking for a new place to meet like-minded women.
The even is this Saturday, at the GCCR, 1407 Sherwood Ave. It’s free. For more info, contact GALS-Richmond@comcast.net
