The holidays are a time for celebration and family togetherness. But things are quite different for military personnel serving our country around the globe. All they can hope for is a phone call or email from their loved ones back home. Hearing a loved one’s voice can bring a bit of holiday cheer to a combat zone, if only for a moment.
But gay and lesbian service members, many in harm’s way, won’t even have that luxury. Under the heavy yoke of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, placing a call home to a partner on Christmas is actually a risk. An overheard word could expose their sexual orientation, and get them drummed out of the military.
It’s happened before, hundreds of times.
This holiday, some may take the risk and place that call, but it’ll be in secret.
