Cirque Du Soleil returned to RVA this week with their newest production, Toruk: the First Flight. A prequeal to the 2009 James Cameron epic Avatar, this story takes place long before humans come to Pandora, home to the Navi (the blue Avatar people).
The storyline finds us with two Navi heroes from on of the planet’s forest clans who take on the task to save the sacred Tree of Souls. To do this, the heroes have to journey to multiple clans, representing different facets of life, and from different areas within this world. The group finds special items used to help control Toruk, the famed mythological flying beast that can help save the Tree.
Through this journey we get to see the creative use of 3D mapping on a grand scale. Each environment has its own look and feel, along with costuming and often rituals that play out using various circus arts and performances.
One of the most impressive parts about this show is the giant tree trunk used in the background along with the full area floor. This trunk moves in various ways in conjunction with performers and mapping to great effect for every scene in the show.
From waterfalls to giant mountain ledges, we are immersed into every scene that is larger than life.
This Cirque Du Soleil is more of an arena spectacular show that focuses on complete submersion into the Avatar world. The special effects, costumes, lights, and 3D Mapping effects take center stage in this vivid landscape that was once the Richmond Coliseum and is now the mystical world of the Navi. You still get the amazing acrobats and circus performers that the troupe are known for, but in this instance everything is immersed into the world they create within Toruk.
It helps if you are familiar with the world of Avatar to get a good understanding of what exactly everything represents. There is much more I could explain or try and tell you about – but the video should give you an idea of the grand scale of this Cirque Du Soleil.
