Chelsea Hits Richmond With A “Bang Bang”
Chelsea Handler has no free time – and with her new book claiming the number one spot on the New York Times Bestsellers List and extending Chelsea Lately on E! through 2012, there are no signs of her slowing down.
She tours Richmond tomorrow night with her new book “Chelsea Chelsea Bang Bang.” Expect to hear quirks from her new life of fame.
We had the chance to catch up Handler by phone as she wrapped up filming her next comedy special.
GayRVA: What’s your favorite celebrity dish right now?
Handler: Charlie Sheen’s pretty entertaining. He always has something going on.
How do you keep track of everything that’s happening?
Every morning, [the show’s] team puts together a whole list of news items so we always have an update of what’s happening. We pull something from different websites – Radar, TMZ, a million.
Do you ever run into celebrities you joust on the show?
I run into people all the time – Paris Hilton, Lohan. They are always really nice and tell me how much they love the show. I wonder of they are actually watching it? I think they just want to be friends so I’ll stop talking about them.
Where did you find Chuy?
I asked them to find me a little nugget. I asked him what 4×4 is and he said “37,” so he was hired.
What was the process like writing your book?
It’s time consuming. This is the first book I’ve written while having a full time show, so it was hard to finish. I might do another book, but I’m going to wait a bit. Three’s a good number for now.
Last year, you were Grand Marshall of the West Hollywood’s LGBT Pride Parade. The gays love you! How did you get involved?
I’ve always had a soft spot for gay and lesbian causes. When they ask and I’m free, I try to help as much as I can.
What’s it like touring with your stand-up act compared to the show?
It’s nice to take a break from talking about celebrities all the time. It’s a chance to start making fun of myself and talk about my life.
Is anything off-limits?
Not really – well, maybe ugly babies.
With the show, writing books, the tour – what do you do when you have free time?
I don’t have much free time with traveling. I have a little tonight, so I’m going to get drunk. I just got a new house during the summer, so there will be some skinny dipping.
Do you have any rituals on the road?
Heavy drinking of Belvidere Vodka. Yes, they are the sponsor of my tour – we have a very close relationship.
Chelsea Handler’s “Chelsea Chelsea Bang Bang” tour hits the Landmark Theater, Saturday June 19 at 8 p.m. Find tickets through Ticketmaster.
“I’m the gay guy that likes Motorhead, I just never have really fit into any category, I don’t have time,” comedian and actor Dan Ruth said in response to the new wave of the technology-obsessed, vain, millennial crowd that’s packing the bar scene these days. The New Yorker is unapologetic, brutally honest, but most importantly, [...]May 19, 2016
