Celebrate RVA’s diverse community at Diversity Richmond’s All Americans Summer Block Party Friday

From outreach, to programs, to fundraisers, classes and discussion groups and more, Diversity Richmond leads the way in its efforts to fight and advocate for the LGBTQ community. And one of those efforts is their annual All Americans Summer Block Party, which will kick off its second year this weekend with games, prizes, music, food, and more.

The free event, which aims to unite RVA’s diverse community, is partnering with Fourth Fridays for the first time this year.

“This was such a phenomenal fun event, and we know obviously Fourth Fridays meets every month and a lot of us participate in that, and we wanted to host it here,” said Bill Harrison, Executive Director of Diversity Richmond. “We want to bring as many people in this building as possible, so I think it will be a lot of people who have never been to Diversity.”

And Harrison said he’s hoping to build on the success of last year’s inaugural event, which drew 300 people.

“We’re preparing for a crowd of about 500 this time because it was so well received last year, and its bigger and better than it was last year,” he said.

All Americans Summer Block Party will offer something for everything from a DJ, to three cash bars, a photo booth, food trucks, Karaoke, and some pretty sweet prizes.

The organization is giving away five $100 prizes for their Karaoke contest, and you don’t have to belt it out like Taylor Swift to win either.

“Talent has nothing to do with it,” Harrison said. “If you sing in Karaoke, your name goes in the pot for a $100 cash prize.”

It’s free to enter the contest too so you might as well give them your best rendition of “I Will Survive.”

Carytown’s Mongrel has donated two $100 gift cards and make sure to snag your free prints when you take some snapshots in the photobooth as well as a souvenir.

And come hungry because several food trucks will be serving up a variety of different cuisines.

“The thought behind calling it ‘All Americans’ is celebrating our diversity and one way we’re doing that is the selection of the food trucks we’re having,” Harrison said.

The Hungry Turtle will be serving Vietnamese food, along with Slideways Mobile Bistro (beef, chicken & veggie sliders and fries), Continental Divide (tacos, burritos, nachos, enchiladas) and Espresso A Go Go will be parked outside Diversity Richmond.

Devil’s Backbone and Miller Lite will be on tap, a variety of wines as well as liquor, which was donated by VA Pride, will be available for $5 each.

Proceeds from the party will go back to support the organization’s programs. Since it’s inception in 1999, Diversity Richmond has given over $900,000 back to the community through its grants program and this event could help push them to a new goal.

“These events help us raise money to put back into the community, and we are reaching the $1 million mark,” Harrison said. “We’ve helped organizations such as Side by Side, Equality Virginia, Richmond Triangle Players, the Black History Museum…so the more money we raise the more we can put back into the community.”

All Americans Summer Block Party will kick off this Friday at Diversity Richmond, located at 1407 Sherwood Avenue. Festivities will run from 5:30-9:30 pm. Rain or shine.
