You couldn’t have asked for a better day to be gay at Busch Gardens this past Saturday, June 15th. The humidity was high, but so were spirits, as a little less than 100 folks came out to support Busch Gardens Gay Days.
Back in ‘The Black Forest,’ a full lunch (with booze!) was provided for guests and Joe Devito, one of the event’s organizers, said the weekend had gone on just as planned. The night before was the ‘unofficial pool party’ held at the local Double Tree hotel. “We had a bunch of people by the pool, a ton of alcohol. I still am a little hung over,” joked DeVito.
Folks had come from around the coast to take part in the event. Between sips of beer and the occasional drag performance, attendees of the big day-of picnic enjoyed the shade before heading out into the rest of the park.
DeVito continued to stress how much of success the event had been, “We exceeded our numbers, We’re in the black finally!” But he admitted it was because of the folks who came out that the event went so well. “Everybody’s support has been awesome. We sold a lot of raffle tickets and a lot of t-shirts, so thanks so much to everyone for that.”
Next year, DeVito is considering moving Gay Day’s to October to coincide with Busch Gardens Hallow-Scream. He said the weather, and the lack of Pride’s every weekend, make Fall a bit more inviting.
Some photos from the picnic are below. Be sure to check back with GayRVA in the future for more Busch Gardens Gay Day’s Events!
