Idina Menzel has announced a 2017 world tour and will return to the Altria Theatre this Spring.
The ever popular chanteuse made a name for herself after starring in the now iconic Rent as Maureen Johnson. However, it wouldn’t be until she starred as Elphaba the Wicked Witch of the West in 2003’s Broadway smash Wicked that Menzel would start to become a household name.
After winning a Tony for her role in Wicked Menzel began to branch out more into film, reprising the role she originally performed on stage for the film adaptation of Rent and starring in Disney’s Enchanted. Menzel didn’t limit herself to film alone, picking up a recurring role on Glee as the mother of her doppelgänger Lea Michele.
However if you’ve come around to Menzel in the past few years there’s one film to credit: Frozen. The 2013 Disney animated film based on The Snow Queen featured Menzel as Elsa, the reluctant queen of a kingdom unaware of her ice powers. The film famously (or infamously if you’re the parent of small children or the son of a Menzel super fan like me) featured the song ‘Let it Go’ which nabbed Menzel her first Grammy.
Menzel has only expanded her music career since Frozen, releasing a self-titled album this past September and continuing to tour worldwide. I caught her last time she toured through Richmond and was suitably impressed. She managed to transition “Let it Go” into “Give it Away” by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, it was wild.
