Purple Crush – Tasyride
Purple Crush is a Brooklyn based dance troupe and musical act with a litigious history. The project’s founders, Isla Cheadle and Jared Selter, describe themselves as the quintessential “hetero-married Queer indie-pop duo,” and have been involved in music production since 2003. “Tastyride” pays homage to the most delectable bits of 90s dancehall jams without sounding stale. Purple Crush is one of our new favorite flavors!
SLOVE – FLASH
If you’re a fan of Brazilian Girls or perhaps some of Fiest’s dancier moments, then the French-electro group SLOVE might be your next fling! The band’s name means “slow love,” which accurately encapsulates both their electronic core and loungier leanings. “Flash” is the perfect collusion between thumping euro dance beats and the angelic indie-pop vocals of the band’s frontwoman Sarah Krebs.
Alo Wala – Cityboy
Alo Wala is the recent project of American MC Shivani Ahlowalia and the Danish band Copia Doble Systema. Together, they deploy a diverse arsenal of influences. As their facebook describes, Alo Wala creates “a well-informed galactic soundtrack for our globally mobile age.” We’re not entirely sure what that means but the end result is certainly worth a listen and a booty shake.
Light Fires – I Like To Work
Light Fires is fronted by Regina, the drag persona of Canadian musician Reg Vermue (aka Gentleman Reg). Regina is what Hedwig might sound like if she grew up listening to more new wave and less glam rock. In spite of being the self-proclaimed “shady angel” of the alleyways, Regina the Gentlelady has collaborated and shared stage time with an impressive stable of fellow musicians including Peaches, Owen Pallett, and Diamond Rings. Her video for, “I Like To Work,” has certainly lit all of our fires…
Hercules & Love Affair – Do You Feel the Same?
This list would not be complete without a nod to the most recent work of Hercules & Love Affair. Each HALA album is kept fresh by a constant rotation of talented artists and musicians. “Do You Feel the Same?” is a predictably dance-friendly track that applies pre-millennial nostalgia with a modern sensibility.
Animal RVA will return to Balliceaux this weekend for their monthly gig, this time, in support of the Richmond Peace Education Center. The collective consists of DJs, musicians, and artists who regularly produce queer-friendly events in the area and will bring their beat-heavy dance party to the venue with DJ CONLEY DIRT ϟTAϟH and ZAVVl.
