September 1, 1978 – The Gay Bob Doll Makes Its Debut in Stores.
Billed as the “World’s First Gay Doll For Everyone,” it was created in 1977 by former advertising executive Harvey Rosenberg. He described the anatomically-correct doll as a cross between Paul Newman and Robert Redford.
Just 12 inches tall, Gay Bob had frocked blond hair and big blue eyes, and was dressed in a flannel shirt, tight jeans and cowboy boots. He also wore a neck chain, an earring and an over-the-shoulder satchel bag. Gay Bob could literally come out of the closet, since he was packaged in a closet box. Inside was also a catalog for ordering additional outfits.
For its time, the Gay Bob doll caused quite a controversy.
First sold by mail order, Gay Bob could be yours for $14.95 plus $1.50 for postage and handling.
