The Man Who Saved Woodstock
Read More: Elliot Tiber, History, Woodstock
Who would have thought a semi-closeted, gay interior designer from New York City would step forward and save Woodstock. His name was Elliot Tiber.
It was July of 1969, less than a month after the Stonewall Riots. Elliot heard that the Woodstock Concert promoters had lost their permit to hold the show in Wallkill, New York.
That wasn’t far from Bethel, where Elliot spent his weekends helping his parents run a shabby hotel.
As President of the Bethel Chamber of Commerce, Elliot was in the business of issuing permits. He offered to hold the show on his parent’s property, but the Woodstock crew said it was too small.
Then, Elliot got an idea. His local dairy farmer, Max Yasgur, had a 600-acre farm, naturally shaped like an amphitheater.
Hear how it all came together tomorrow.
