April 30, 1877 – Alice B. Toklas is born in San Francisco.

Alice B. Toklas was certainly her own woman. At 29, after having earned a university education, she left for Paris. There, in 1907, she met Gertrude Stein, and the striking duo entertained a parade of famous artists and writers in their home.

Alice B. was a chain smoker with a slight mustache, and wore Gypsy earrings and manicured nails. Friends noticed how much she and Gertrude flirted with each other, one sign of their unique “marriage.”

Like Gertrude, Alice got attention through her writings. She gained wide notoriety with, “The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas,” which was actually Gertrude’s memoirs.
By Gertrude’s side when she died in 1949, Alice died 21 years later. She was buried alongside her beloved Gertrude.
