According to an e-mail sent last week by Fieldens President Mike Love, the private club has hired a new management company and closed down for improvements.  An April 2nd reopening is slated.

From the e-mail:

I’m pleased to announce that we have hired a new management company and that we will begin a much needed Spring cleaning. You’ll also see some improvements around the club, including a freshly painted exterior and enhanced audio visual experience. Improvements take time, so we’ll have to close the club starting March 8th. That means next week’s show and the Bal de Sade are canceled and may be rescheduled. Look on our website (I’ll update it on Monday) and the facebook page announcements for the April reopening..

Fielden’s is quite possibly the most disgusting place in Richmond. The building looks like it’s literally falling apart. It will probably take more than a month to get it in shape.

Proud to say my mom was a member in the early 80s–she said it was a wreck then. It’ll be interesting to see if they can upgrade from the dingy, dirty, dated hole that it’s been for the last 25+ years.

I’m head of tech for a burlesque troop that was supposed to be performing at ball de sade. We found out the event was canceled at the same time Fieldens sent out their mass e-mail saying the club would be closed.

Given the abruptness of the closure I think it’s more than just some renovations and a facelift. Having been in the building it’s more likely that the space isn’t up to code and/or isn’t accessible and the new management company requires it to be.

Hopefully it will stay closed for good. That place is just a piece of filth. The look of the outside matches the seediness of the inside and the people there.

Want to know why the club hasn’t been repaired? Because not enough members come out and spend money on a regular basis. Hard to keep the doors open (let alone make a profit) when only a dozen or so people show up on Friday. Cover is a whopping $3 and beers are still under $4 dollars….and where else can you drink LEGALLY until the sun comes up?

Mike and Charles worked damn hard to provide the ENTIRE community with a safe place to go and enjoy a drink, regardless of your lifestyle. Try being a little grateful for those who are out there trying to make things better instead of sitting behind your keyboard and hooking up on A4A and Craigslist.

    CHGuy,
It’s not the members’ responsibility for the upkeep of an establishment. That lies on the owners. Members do not want to spend money at a place that’s covered in filth and falling apart.

And Fielden’s is hardly a safe place. I’ve been groped and had unwanted sexual advances by shady people more times than I can remember.

Those kind of things don’t make me want to go back and support the business. If those things change, I’ll support it.

As a former employee of a bar, it was nice to have some where to go on friday or saturday night once my co-workers and I got off work after 2:00am, when the rest of the city was shutting down, to grab a drink, or two, or six…haha.

Mike and Charles are two of the greatest men I know in the gay community, and I know they work hard to keep Fieldens up and running. It is not like they are laying on the beach, sipping margaritas during the week; they actually have other jobs…

Considering Fieldens is only open two days out of the week, that they have bills to pay to keep the place open, and bills in their personal lives, I can see how it can be difficult to afford to maintain such a large building.

I’m glad they are taking time to renovate now, but I’m sure they can only do but so much. Perhaps it is time for the community to step up and do something besides spend 25+ years bitching about the place…. It is obviously of some value in the gay community since it has been open that long…

im sorry, but I wouldnt want to support such a crappy place, but the worst part the owners Mike and especially Charles are NOT very customer friendly…im sorry $10 is too much for non members and the membership price is NOT worth the tired music and attitude.

I’d be willing to bet the same folk bitching about Fieldens being so “seedy” and crappy are the same ones whining about there being so few choices for gay folk in Richmond. Get off yer asses and visit the places we do have and support them and just maybe they’ll improve.

Seriously, I’m tired of all the whiney bitches in this city that are too lazy to actually do something to improve what they’re whining about. Get the dicks out of your asses and make a differance.

  1. [...] Fieldens reopened on Saturday night and several club-goers were asked to leave.  NBC12 has more on the story. “They were telling people it was straight night,” said club-goer, Josh Lewis. “I heard they were telling guys who were kissing that they could not display affection. I heard them go up to 2 guys that were dancing that they could not do that here.” [...]
