Artistic Director Tim Gillham was pleasantly surprised by the turnout as he auditioned ladies for the new Richmond Women’s Chorus.
“Women have been coming up to us for years telling us, ‘we would like a chorus,’” Gillham says. ”It’s been in our plans. This is going to be the year of the woman.”
The new choral group makes its debut this Saturday as Monument City Music, the parent company of the Richmond Men’s Chorus, presents its annual gala.
The creation of the Women’s Chorus coincides with the 2010 celebration by the Virginia Commission of the Arts called Minds Wide Open. The celebration recognizes the contributions of women in arts and culture.
Saturday’s gala features a silent auction of artwork, gift baskets, and vacations. Advance tickets to the event at the University of Richmond’s Jepson Alumni Center are $30 and available online. Tickets are $40 at the door.
