Each year, the Gay Community Center of Richmond helps fund programs that are advancing the lives of LGBT people in Central Virginia.  More from the GCCR.

GCCR has previously funded a variety of organizations that work with Central Virginia’s LGBT communities, including Equality Virginia Education Fund, ROSMY, and the Richmond chapter of the Gay, Lesbian, Straight Education Network (GLSEN).

In 2008 the GCCR Board of Directors voted to create the “Jon Klein Grant for Community Activism” in honor of the Founder of the Gay Community Center of Richmond. In a career in Richmond spanning two decades, Jon Klein worked to protect and advance the lives and opportunities shared by all our in our community, from those who find themselves homeless or at risk, to those who want to find a sense of belonging and to learn from cultural and educational opportunities. This grant will be awarded to a project that meets the spirit of Jon’s devotion to grass roots organizing and community development.

Organizations that are not designed to primarily benefit the LGBT communities are still eligible for funds as long as the program for which funds are sought will benefit the LGBT community. Previous grant recipients include the Virginia Historical Society (to catalog and preserve documents relating to LGBT history in Richmond), the Virginia Holocaust Museum (for a permanent exhibit on the Nazi persecution of gays), the Virginia Breast Cancer Foundation (for a health initiative targeting lesbians), Meals on Wheels (to provide meals to people living with HIV), Barksdale Theatre (to help with production costs of The Laramie Project) and the Fan Free Clinic (to fund an HIV case manager).

The application deadline is 5:00pm, September 18th, and the grant application guidelines are available by clicking here. The grant application cover sheet can be found here.

Applications can also be requested by calling the Gay Community Center of Richmond at 804-622-4646.
