Saturday, Godfrey’s is being transformed into a cabaret of sorts. The ladies of Sweet Tease Burlesque are taking over with an infused style of modern dance and bold moves.

“We wanted to be able to show our dance backgrounds with something a little more late-night,” troop member Katie Dean says. “It’s a little bit different – a little more ballsy.”

The ladies explore the art of seduction in their new show, “The Swagger.” Sweet Tease incorporates seven new pieces ranging from old Nat King Cole to current selections.

The ladies are classically trained all graduating with dance degrees from VCU. The group came together after inspiration from a performance at Gallery 5. Dean says their training allows them to infuse classical sensibility to burlesque.

“In modern dance, there’s typically a more quiet audience, but it’s nice to get everyone involved and a little more rowdy.”

To get the crowd riled up, an emcee teaches the audience about burlesque etiquette and that it’s okay to cheer and yell. The troop addresses the audience just as much.

Richmond’s booming with burlesque right now – a number of troops have popped up over the past few years. Dean explains that one aspect bringing this about is the escapism attitude people have during the economic slowdown.

“People like to see something that’s different from their everyday element,” she said.

Can’t make it Saturday? Don’t worry – two more shows are planned at Godfrey’s with the next one on July 11.
