After donning a bright blond wig and some heels, the actor jumps back into the role of the Duke of Athens. In the Richmond Shakespeare performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, these lightening shifts in performance are part of the fun according to Artistic Director Grant Mudge.

“Just these five actors perform all the roles,” Mudge said. “Shakespeare’s company would have had 15 or 20.” “Until you’ve seen it’s, hard to believe.”

Next year, Richmond Shakespeare celebrates its 25th year with a move to the brand new performing arts complex Centerstage. Next month, the company kicks of its 12th Annual Richmond Shakespeare Festival at Agecroft Hall in Windsor Farms. This outdoor summer series of performances mirrors Shakespeare’s time when he was often playing in an outdoor theater.

“[Agecroft Hall] stood in England while Shakespeare was alive,” Mudge said. “The building was shipped to America and reconstructed on the James River Valley. In his plays, there are all of these references to the stars, the winds, and the woods so it’s a great place for a backdrop.”

The company performs an encore of A Midsummer Night’s Dream as part of the Richmond Shakespeare Festival July 2-12.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream runs through May 10 at Second Presbyterian Church, 5 North 5th Street. www.richmondshakespeare.com

In the photo caption under “GayRVA Perks” you say that mentioning GayRVA at the door gets us two tickets for the price of one; however, later in the body of the article you say that GayRVA readers get only 20% off the tickets when mentioned at the door. Which is it?

It’s two for one. They upgraded their original offer and I didn’t edit that part. Thanks for catching.
